New River Medical Center's diabetes education program provides people living with diabetes the skills to lead a healthy, normal lifestyle. Diabetes, if left undiagnosed or untreated, can cause a variety of health complications.
Our Certified Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian work with you and your physician to provide an individualized treatment plan that best suits your needs. An individualized plan allows you to modify your lifestyle choices and be in control of your diabetes, rather than having the disease be in control of you.
New River Medical Center offers the following diabetes educational programs:

Monthly Education Classes
Free monthly education classes are offered for individuals living with diabetes and their families to learn more about the disease. Various health topics relating to diabetes are presented. This class meets the first Tuesday of each month from October through May at 7 p.m. No class is scheduled for the month of January. Classes are free of charge and open to the public.
Diabetes Group Education Classes
This four-session program, which has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association, provides the education you need to successfully manage your diabetes. Diet instruction is taught by a Registered Dietitian who provides you with information on meal planning, reading food labels, exercising and much more.
Information is also provided on steps you can take to manage diabetes for your best health. Glucose meter training is provided.
Diabetes education classes require a referral from your physician. Contact your primary physician for more information. The cost of these classes are covered by most health insurance companies.
