Consultation with a Sleep Specialist
Helping people with sleep problems is not limited to running sleep tests. The Sleep Center has board-certified Sleep Medicine physicians on staff including a pediatric sleep specialist and an experienced Sleep Medicine nurse practioner. Their job is to listen to a patient's story, examine them, then determine which sleep test is appropriate. All patients are seen at least once by a sleep specialist, and in many cases we provide long-term management. A consultation can be ordered by your care provider, or you can contact the Sleep Center directly to arrange for an appointment with a sleep specialist.
Polysomnogram or Overnight Sleep Study
A polysomnogram, or overnight sleep study, is the most common sleep test, and the gold standard for diagnosing sleep apnea. The patient is monitored in the sleep lab overnight for problems with breathing, heart rhythms, body movements and sleep quality. We provide this test for adults and children over age 2. Polysomnography is ordered by a health provider, either your primary clinician or a Sleep Center physician.
Multiple Sleep Latency Test
A Multiple Sleep Latency test is a daytime test, conducted in the sleep lab, that objectively measures sleepiness. The test is reserved for that fraction of patients who are troubled by excessive daytime sleepiness but have a normal overnight sleep test. It is usually performed when narcolepsy is suspected. This test is always preceded by an overnight sleep study and is ordered at the discretion of the Sleep Center staff in appropriate cases.
Sleep Apnea Screening Test
We offer a FREE at-home screening for obstructive sleep apnea. The screening device is the size of a cell phone, is worn overnight and records breathing changes during sleep. This test is helpful when there is a concern that sleep apena might be present but the patient or physician is reluctant to do the "gold-standard" polysomnogram without some evidence that sleep apnea exists. Because results need to be interpreted in the context of the patient's symptoms, a health care provider must order this free test.

Maintenance of Wakefulness Test
The Maintenance of Wakefulness test is conducted in the sleep lab during the day. It measures how well someone can remain awake. This test is conducted occasionally, usually for people who have known sleep problems, and need to prove they are awake enough to perform their job safely.
Actigraphy
Actigraphy is used to track sleep patterns over a two to three week period. It is a home study in which the patient wears a small wristwatch-like device that detects motion, providing a good approximation of whether someone is sleeping or awake. Actigraphy is ordered by one of the Sleep Center care providers and helps evaluate patients with irregular sleep patterns.
